CAROTID STROKE

1What is stroke?
Stroke means paralysis

2Why stroke occurs?
A stroke (brain attack) occurs due to inadequate or complete cessation of blood supply to the brain or due to brain hemorrhage

There are two kinds of stroke, hemorrhagic and ischemic. Hemorrhagic strokes are caused by bleeding within the brain. Ischemic strokes, which are far more common, are caused by a blockage of blood flow in brain arteries.
3What are the symptoms of a stroke?
  • Sudden numbness, weakness, or paralysis of the face, arm, or leg
  • Difficulty in speaking
  • Temporary loss of vision
  • Loss of balance and coordination
When these symptoms disappear within 24 hours or less, they are called transient ischemic attack (TIA).
4How to investigate stroke?
Stroke is usually treated by either a physician or a neuro physician. Initially, a CT scan brain helps to differentiate hemorrhagic or ischemic stroke.

Further investigation of ischemic stroke is done with Carotid duplex Ultrasound, CT angiography, and /or MR angiography of Aortic arch and neck vessels
5What are the treatment options of ischemic stroke?
  1. Best Medical treatment includes control of risk factors like high blood sugar, high cholesterol, moderate control of high blood pressure, Cessation of smoking, and medications like Aspirin, Statin, Anticogualants, etc
  2. Carotid endarterectomy operation
  3. Carotid angioplasty & Stenting: non-operative method
